Project Description

I3Bs, UMinho

Alexandra P. Marques has a PhD on Materials Science and Technology – Biomaterials from the University of Minho, Portugal and in cooperation with the University of Liverpool, UK, and a BSc in Biochemistry from the University of Porto, Portugal. She is a Founder and Principal Investigator of the 3B’s Research Group, a research unit of the I3Bs – Research Institute on Biomaterials, Biodegradables and Biomimetics, of which is vice-president, at the University of Minho in Portugal. She is also Member of the Governing Board of the PT Government Associate Laboratory ICVS/3B´s. From July 2018 is an Elected Council Member of the European Wound Management Association.

Alexandra P. Marques has been integrating knowledge on stem cells and biomaterials into tissue engineering as a way to define innovative strategies to improve the functionality of skin engineered constructs. The establishment of in vitro 3D culture platforms to understand cellular crosstalk, as well to be able to modulate the engineered constructs outcome, has been the focus of her work. Ultimately, she envisions taking advantage of the generated knowledge to advance the creation of engineered in vitro 3D skin models with features that are not provided by current systems. In 2016 she was also awarded a Consolidator Grant from the European Research Council (ERC-2016-COG) with the project ECM_INK – Cells-self Extracellular Matrices-based Bioinks to create accurate 3D diseased skin tissue models.
